I was sexually harassed in VR, but I voluntarily

"After my friend has experienced this role, I feel that in that moment, he didn't know how to get rid of these hands ... That state made him feel controlled. He just wanted to do whatever he could, and couldn't get rid of it."

Put sexual harassment into VR

My major is called the Internet plus innovative design, which is a cross -disciplinary specialty. In the summer vacation of 2018, I went to France to participate in a joint project. The other party's laboratory provided technology, including robots and 3D printing. My task was to find a team and propose a sustainable project plan.

Our team members come from different countries. I am China. Two girls are from the United States, one from Turkey, and two boys from France and India. The boy in India was a joke very much. At first, he didn't think it was important to have gender -related things. He wanted to push an environmental protection project at the time, and French boys also supported it.

Before going to France, I just experienced a sexual harassment.

I was working for a consulting agency at the time. During a foreign research, the company arranged a partner to pick me up. It's okay to go on the way. When he came back, he deliberately touched my hand.

The car drove directly to the hotel. He asked me to wait for him to wait for him in the executive lounge. Later, he told me that something asked me to go with him. As a result, I went directly to a room. At this time, I no longer hesitated and started to find excuses to leave, but when I was still looking for, he came up directly.

I pushed him away, he went to the bathroom, I pretended to call, saying that my mother needed me to go back and left the scene.

I shared this story with the team members, and it turned out that they thought of their own experience: American girls had seen a violent conflict between men and women on the side of the road. She wanted to go up to help but worry about it. I have encountered extremely uncomfortable conversation; the little brother in France has a strong empathy for this topic. When you tell him this story, he immediately reacted to the discomfort of the parties.

Especially the Indian boy, he has a sister who has encountered sexual harassment in public places. He didn't understand this in the past -it was too common in India. As a result, after listening to the encounter that everyone shared, he became more aggressive than everyone, thinking that a solution was needed to educate men, and even with a punishment perspective.

We often say one thing. If you have not experienced it, you can't understand it. So we decided to let everyone go through once -see if I can use VR to bring you more empathy for sexual harassment.

How is it called sexual harassment?

We used panoramic shooting and CGI animation modeling, stringing the stories of several teams as the story script, and the American girl played the main perspective to shoot the entire environment, like an immersive interactive film. The difference is that we have added a pair of 3D modeling hands and use Leap Motion to capture the hand movements of the experiencer, so that the experiencer can interact with the film content.

We set up an experiencer to "cross" into the body of a girl. The scene of the story starts from going out. "You" intends to meet with friends, and will choose whether to wear skirts or pants through those hands.

In 2018, everyone will also discuss "how do you wear to cause sexual harassment." In order to break such stereotypes, we have set up such a choice -although the group members come from different places, they think that they need to be put into VR for discussion. Whether the choice of clothing in their respective cultural backgrounds tends to be open or open or opens or Conservative, everyone has the same myth.

On the way to the bar, "You" witnessed a violent conflict between street couples. You can choose whether to intervene. If you interfere, you will invite that girl to go with you. If you don't interfere, you will do nothing.

From here, we discuss a question -what is sexual harassment? Is intimate relationship violence in public places? Is it a matter of saying that? Isn't it considered a phone call in the bar?

There will be some differences in gender in this matter, such as India and French boys, they will feel that some behaviors are just a habitual joke. Including the workshops related to sexual harassment, I asked participants to think about the definition of sexual harassment, and found that people had different feedback on the community restrictions.

There are different feedback on wherever the community limit is

For example, we have proposed a scene: Little A wore a pair of frames without lenses. Little B was curious, and pierced it up, and poked Xiao A's cheeks. This scene will be a little discomfort for some students, but some students will not feel anything, and some students say to see who is the little B. If it is a good friend, it doesn't matter Such a cooked person is very wrong.

In addition to the very serious violations, we found that it is difficult to define whether the judgment of the sexual harassment line is. So later we tend to consider this problem from the perspective of the parties. When one party clearly refuses and tells you that you do n’t want to happen again, you should stop and apologize immediately. Different countries' division of sexual harassment definition

China: violates the wishes of others, and perform sexual harassment to others in words, words, images, limb behavior and other methods

Britain: The opponent's unwanted, sexual behavior will invade the dignity of the other party, or create an intimidated, hostile, insulting or offending environment

The United States: Unpopular sexual teasing, sexual requirements, and other sexual characteristics and physical behavior of sexual characteristics

Japan: Speaking of sexual content (pursuing factual sexual relationships, communication with sex content, inviting meals or dating, etc.) or sexual actions (compulsive relationships, unnecessary physical contact, sending or suspending obscene pictures , Forced obscenity, rape, etc.)

In the end, we retained the scene of violent conflict in intimate relationships on the street, because this is more hidden. At the same time, I want to reflect how you can deal with similar things if you walk on the street.

The third step is finally to the bar. At this time, there will be a strange man in -the one that looks very romantic -he first teased the waiter on the bar, then bought a glass of wine, and walked to "You" On the right side, sit down and chat with you.

When making this picture, it will make the actor very close to the camera, causing a sense of oppression to the experiencer. He didn't do anything and had no physical movements, but he could make "you" experience a feeling of uncomfortableness. In the end he touched the "you" thigh.

Due to the lack of physical interaction with VR, we worked artificially at the scene: when the man touched "you" in the VR, we will take a shot in reality.

We did not set up "you" to resist this piece, because in the process of discovering that in this process, we didn't know what to do, and I was subconsciously stunned.

Virtual experience in exchange for real empathy?

After the project was completed, I brought it back to domestic universities and invited students to experience it. There are many girls in participants, accounting for about two -thirds, and basically their junior goes up.

Age does affect the feeling of this sexual harassment topic. We have intended to contact high school students, but the initial investigation found that their understanding of this topic still stayed at laughter and scolding. Most of them were hard to face this issue seriously.

Workshop experience | Interviewee confession

In colleges, some boys will treat this as a VR game, and feel that this fresh thing is a bit fun.

In the company, the discussion of the participants is closer to reality, and focuses on specific scenes: for example, on the wine table, in the upper and lower relationships, what should I do if I encounter something?

Especially those "newcomers in the workplace" who have participated in the work for less than five years, they have just left the education system sent by the college and started to face more complicated power relationships. They are difficult to judge on some ambiguous experiences. The help path is narrow.

Of course, when you encounter the kind of experience who can be empathic, when a boy experiences the part of the bar, he also admits not to know how to get rid of those hands -that state made him feel that he was controlled by his control That is, you can't do anything if you want to do anything.

Therefore, in addition to the VR experience, we have made a workshop -added the part of group discussion and offline interactive games, hoping to enhance this kind of empathy and mutual understanding. For example, let the host play the leader B of the company to inspect the company. The participants present played a small A responsible for receiving. B will boast that Xiao A is very beautiful. Ask Xiao A how he feels about himself. Let everyone take the dragon how to perform in turn.

Workshop scene | Interviewee confession

I found that everyone's response was different. Some are very powerful and they will refuse; but more people do not have a special concept of the specific method of refusing, and even form some "opportunities" to put themselves in a more passive state.

When encountering sexual harassment in reality, self -confidence will be the first reaction of many parties. Including me, I also feel that it is my own problem: Is it too lively on the road? Let him feel like I feel good about him? Did you sit wrong? Should I sit behind?

In the VR experience, after encountering a bar incident, the parties will also have a "reflection" monologue on the way home: Is it because of what caused me to wear?

But in fact, there is no need to blame at all. The cause of sexual harassment has no necessary cause and effect with the gender, appearance, and clothes of the parties. We will emphasize this.

Capital measures for sexual harassment

beforehand:

Create support network

Public places meet

In the case:

Retain evidence

Recognize the signs of danger: language tests of sex, unnecessary physical contact, deliberate manufacturing opportunities

Reasonable rejection: such as transfer location, action avoidance, language rejection, help

afterwards:

Collect evidence: such as detail records, e -notary, medical records

Seeking social assistance: such as women's federation, social workers, psychological assistance, 110 data source: post -life value

The power of bystanders

After experiencing VR content and offline interaction, many people have begun to think about the role of bystanders -because it will have a great impact on the ending. For example, the scene of the bar is the appearance of "you" and interrupted it all.

We do not want to put the task of changing the ending, only on the head of the parties, which will cause the illusion of a victim: the parties did not make a "better" choice at the time, so they must be responsible for their actions.

"You" friends appeared, interrupted all this | VR video screenshot

Many people, especially boys, do not feel that they will become the victim after experiencing, but they can see the behavior of the bystanders in VR: actively come forward under the premise of conditions permit, and understand that empathy is affected by infringement. The parties respect their wishes.

But this is a situation where scarcity in real life. In the scene where most sexual harassment occurs, the onlookers are mostly in the role of inaction and even harmful. A girl in our team was attacked in the mall. She immediately chose to report the case, but found that the police would repeatedly ask the details of the incident over and over again, which itself brought her serious secondary damage. When the surveillance was adjusted, the staff in the monitoring room asked what it was. She said it was sexual harassment, and the man laughed.

So later, we set up a thing called fate. When you ask for help for a third party, you will use a lottery to determine the actions of a third party. "Under the premise of helping each other", this will determine the direction of the story.

Technology and not

Through the production and promotion of this project, I have contacted many projects combining many technologies and gender issues, and some are very inspiring. For example, there is a smart skirt that makes sexual harassment "see". There are touch sensors in the skirt. There are three female volunteers wearing this dress to the bar, but they found that they encountered 157 within four hours of the bar spent the bar. Second oil.

But overall, there are still too few projects that promote gender issues through technical tools, and the production threshold is too high. For example, I think in VR, let the protagonist interact with the actor, but this requires all the perpetrators to model 3D, plus the construction of richer scenes, branches and settings ... the amount of project is huge, production production, production production The cost will rise even more.

Modeling screen | Interviewee confesses

At the same time, the VR form itself also has great limitations. The equipment is not popular. There is only one school. If you find a business sponsorship, there will be two or three units. It is difficult to iterate content and experience.

After the "technical experience+traditional interaction" workshop formed, some companies came to ask us to do sexual harassment prevention training. Most of them were foreign companies, as well as some Internet companies. But this demand is not stable. Only March each year is our market peak, or after some online hot public opinion incidents.

The overall feeling is that our society regards sexual harassment as an important but not urgent thing.

And among those who pay attention to gender issues, there are fewer science and technology backgrounds. Technicians usually come into contact with some business scenarios. They can naturally think of technological innovation points, but they can't think of where social needs are. So now I want to find out how to break the irrelevant state between the three of the technology, social welfare organizations and business institutions.

However, by doing this project, I have also gained a broad emotional exit myself, which can get out of the initial sexual harassment encounter, making me feel that I am trying to change this matter -although I still can't go to that hotel now, pass the place passing by that place, passing that place to that place Still feel discomfort.
