Human beings are in the trap of collective pessimism and getting out of the trap and need to believe in the power.

Although as a text worker, it is not uncommon to be rejected, but it will still cause me to fall into a vortex of self -doubt. In the days before the new crowns, when the negative dark abyss beckon me, I can expect my family and friends to help me re -adjust. With their help, I will realize that I am too concerned about negative things, ignore the evidence of success in the past, or forget the positive feedback I have received.

Then, the new crown broke out. When it started to appear in the news, I was convinced as usual that the worst thing was coming. As usual, the optimists around me opposed it. Two years later, my pessimism defeated me. Now, when I fall into the whirlpool of anxiety, what I see is not an angry and compassionate smile, but the other pessimist nodded. I have been annoyed by those who are always optimistic, and now I miss them. We are trapped in a collective pessimistic trap.

It makes sense for people to feel more and more pessimistic about our common future. The threat of world wars is imminent. Climate change brings more and more possibility of catastrophic consequences, and the endless epidemic threats that have endlessly affect our livelihood and our prospects. In the European Union, a survey conducted in December 2019 shows that 58%of European adults are optimistic about their future, and only 42%of them are optimistic about the future of their country. Recently, a survey conducted in the United States in January 2022 showed that the gap between individuals and collective views reached a record high. 85%of the American adults expressed satisfaction with their lives, and only 17%were satisfied with the development direction of the United States. The gap between our optimism of personal life and the pessimism of the collective future is called "optimism gap". Psychologists and economists have been arguing about this gap. But in any reason, the pessimism of our collective future may bring terrible consequences.

The problem of pessimism is that it weakens the motivation we try. Most of us are familiar with individual pessimist traps. You think you can't run a marathon, so you decide not to try it; when you sit on the sofa to watch mobile news, you see that your neighbors run through the window, which will only make you more convinced that running is not suitable for you. Pessimist trap will also combat collective will. If each of us is sure that our collective plan will fail, then we will not waste time to try. If we do not try, then our fear of the collective future is more likely to become a reality.

The core of the collective pessimism trap is the phenomenon of chickens or eggs first. Each of us needs to believe that we can achieve our collective goals so that we can stand up from the sofa to work together. However, in order to let us believe that our collective ability is rational, we must believe that everyone can do their own part. On the other hand, the extent that everyone does depends on how much they think we are likely to achieve common goals, and this depends on how much they think that others are likely to complete their tasks. See the problem. How can we do it? Can we take the first step and make ourselves more likely to victory?

We are not only concerned about whether it is correct, but also how to make it correct

From a certain perspective, this problem seems to be misleading. We can't simply choose what we want. Our belief is designed to let us understand the true appearance of the world. To do this, our beliefs need to respond to the evidence. Maybe we find that we are trapped in the dark abyss, because from all aspects, the evidence of facts is bad. Climate change not only happened, but also seemed to be accelerating. We once believed that the epidemic was about to end, but it returned to the previous state due to the emergence of new variants. Many of us thought that the days when armed conflict between Europe had passed, but found that we were on the edge of another world war. Isn't it believed that we are destined to fail? If we only care about whether one thing is correct, it may look like a reasonable position. But our belief in the goals we can achieve is different, and they are related to a future that has not been determined. Should we believe that we can cope with the huge challenges in front of us? The current signs are both frustrated and encouraging. There are differences in the collective response method of this categorian disease, lack of motivation, and abandon themselves. Nevertheless, many young people are still active and confident. We seem to be unable to solve the problem of diffusion of error information worldwide, but scientists have developed the COVID-19 vaccine within a record time.

There seems to be two claims for evidence. If our beliefs are only related to correct, then pessimism and optimism seem to be rational. The evidence did not tell us which is right. But we are not just concerned about whether it is correct, but we also care about how to make it correct. When we encounter challenges that hinder us give up, the belief we can achieve what we can achieve is inspiring us to try. Therefore, although the evidence is not clear, we still have good reasons to maintain optimism.

Back to the case. How do we get ourselves from the trap of pessimism? First of all, we need to stop paying attention to negative news and make a wider and richer evaluation of our own situation. Here, these messages often have no help, it just concentrates our despair. We need to be for ourselves, for each other, to highlight any evidence that people work together and achieve success.

However, when it comes to personal situation, it is not enough to transfer attention. We need to do this work. The first few running will give you the confidence of continuing to run. The more miles you run, the easier it is to reach your goal. Each of us needs to do our best in exercising "collective muscles". It is not easy to achieve this in this world of popular diseases. We are isolated. Like many others, I have returned to the comfort zone.

Today, my happiness may come from my four -year -old son's cute prank. But we need to remember that through our efforts, we are more likely to convince our neighbors that joining us will not waste their time. This is how we succeed. For example, response to climate change seems to be the goal that we cannot reasonably expected. But there are other goals: to establish compost, reduce automobile emissions, and improve home insulation in our community, these are all realized.

To achieve these goals and remind us of our achievements and mutual achievements, we can encourage us to achieve more ambitious goals. It is reasonable to believe that we can surpass the current situation, but we need to help each other to believe this again.
