On July 14, according to the BBC report, experts from the Scottish National Art Museum (NGS) found X -ray inspections on Van Gogh's paintings that Van Gogh's self -portrait was hidden on the back of another work.

Hidden self -portrait

A statement at the National Museum of Art of Scotland stated that the self -portrait was hidden on the back of Van Gogh's early work "The Avatar of the Farmer Woman" and was covered by glue and cardboard. This painting is about to be exhibited. The exhibition visitors will be able to see Van Gogh's self -portrait under the X -ray for the first time through the special light box.

From the portrait, Van Gogh was beards, wearing a hats, and a loose scarf on his neck. His eyes stared at the front, his right face was in the shadow, and his left ear was clearly visible (Van Gogh cut off his left ear in the later period).

Lesley Stevenson, a senior administrator of the gallery, said that when she found Van Gogh's "looking at us", she felt "very shocked." She said: "This is a major discovery, so that we can better understand the life of Van Gogh."

"Farmer's Avatar"

It is reported that because of life constraints, Van Gogh often reuses canvas to save money before his lifetime. For example, this work may be that after drawing a portrait, turning the canvas over, and then completing the avatar of the peasant woman on the other side.

The painting shows a local farmer from the small town of southern Netherlands. Van Gogh lived there from December 1883 to November 1885.

About 15 years after his death, "The Farmer's Avatar" was lent to the Amsterdam City Museum for exhibition.

Since then, this painting has been easy to get through and was acquired by Inelin St. Croy Fleming in 1923. His son Ian is the creator of the famous James Bond.

It was not until 1951 that the painting came to Scotland and became the collection of a local lawyer couple in Edinburgh. In 1960, they donated "The Farmer's Avatar" as a gift to the Scottish National Art Museum.

Professor Francis Folk of the National Museum of Art in Scotland describes the discovery as "an incredible gift for Scotland."

She said: "We found a unknown work in Van Gogh. Such opportunities are very rare. He is one of the most important and popular artists in the world."

Experts at the museum currently stated that they may be able to take out hidden self -portraits, but the process of removing glue and cardboard requires fine work. They are studying how to do this without hurting the "Farmer's Avatar".

Van Gogh is one of the most famous and influential characters in the history of Western art, but he has basically not sold any works in his life. The wider known is November 1888. The name "Red Vineyard" sold 400 franc (about 6000-7000 yuan now).

"Dr. Gache"

In 1890, the 37 -year -old Van Gogh became famous after his death. Until the first ten years after entering the 20th century, the world's evaluation of him suddenly changed dramatically, and the price of works also skyrocketed. On May 15, 1990, "Dr. Gacha" was sold for $ 82.5 million, setting the world's highest record at that time at that time. This record has remained until May 5, 2004. For 14 years.
