Born, studying in the United States, studying in the United States

As a typical return intellectual in the Republic of China, Yu Nanqiu's success experience is quite representative.

Yu Nanqiu was born in Changsha Yu's. According to Mr. Zhou Yaming's article in the article "The Exciting Years of an Intellectual", the family is a Changsha Wang tribe, and the celebrities have emerged in recent times. Yu Nanqiu's father, Yu Zhaosheng, is a well -known educator in Hunan. He is deeply influenced by Wei Yuan's "Shi Yi's long skills" thought. After studying in Japan, he was educated in his hometown of Daxing. Uncle Bo Zhaokang, Guangxu Jinshi, once served as Shandong and Jiangxi according to the ambassador, the Hunan Guangdong Railway Corporation, and the prime minister. His brother Yu Biqi was the director of the Construction Department of the Hunan Province of the Republic of China. The enlightenment of his father and the strong financial resources of the family are important guarantees to support Yu Nanqiu to study in the United States.

Yu Nanqiu, then the director of the liberal arts of Fudan University and Yu Yan, the younger sister Yu Yan (from the 1928 "Picture Times")

Yu Nanqiu returned to China after obtaining a master's degree in literature at the State University of Illinois. It is worth noting that this is a talent for choosing many students in the United States in the early years of the Republic of China. In the early years of the Republic of China (1912 to 1920), up to 1/3 of Chinese students in the United States were trained by the University of Illinois. As early as 1906, Edmund J. James (1855-1925, 1904-1920 at Edmund J. James (1855-1925, 1904-1920), he believed in US President's Edor Roosevelt and suggested that Gengzi compensation for the development of Chinese education in China cause. This proposal was later developed into a scholarship for Gengzi compensation, and many Chinese students benefited.

However, why does the University of Illinois have favored students in the early years of the Republic of China?

First, thanks to the support of the University of Illinois's education in China.

At the beginning of the 20th century, under the leadership of the President Edmond James, the University of Illinois gradually developed into a comprehensive research university. On the one hand, James hopes to raise the school's influence in the United States and become a public university that can be compared with Harvard University. On the other hand, he hopes to expand the cultural influence of the United States throughout the world through education. In 1906, James jointly suggested that the US President THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1882-1945) refunded some US governments based on the "Xin Chou Ugly in 1901" signed with the Qing government. The "Gengzi Compensation" obtained by the Treaty will use it to help the Chinese government develop modern (American) education. In 1908, the US Minister in China officially stated to the Qing government that half of the "Gengzi compensation" in the United States was used as a funding for students to stay in the United States. In the same year, James invited Wu Tingfang, then the Minister of the Qing government to the United States as a guest speaker at the University of Illinois. Shortly after the visit, Wu Tingfang to Edmond James, who planned to recommend two students to learn laws, and asked the enrollment policy and tuition in detail. President James immediately answered a warm letter, emphasizing the relatively low tuition and living costs of the University of Illinois. He also mentioned the "Gengzi Compensation Scholarship" and showed Wu Tingfang that he "eagerly hopes to pass you ... to convey my sincere welcome to every Chinese student who wants to study at the University of Illinois." In addition, he also said, "I hope you can send a list and address of an official student, and their specific study abroad plans."

At this point, the University of Illinois has gradually opened up the situation in China with its low tuition and living costs. "Oriental Magazine", as a very influential Shanghai journal in the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, has published an article compared the cost of studying abroad in different universities in the United States, and a wave of "advertising" was fierce. On the eve of the First World War, Chinese students have become the largest number of international students in Illinois. With the gradual increase of Chinese students, the school's care of the living standards of Chinese students and academic undertakings has also favored the University of Illinois in Chinese youths. President James established the "Foreign Student Office" in 1913 (promoted to "foreign student college" in 1919). It offers a language expansion course, provided one -to -one language teaching services, and established a boarding family system throughout the city to make the family system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the home system to make the family system to make the family system. The office has become a warm and warm home for Chinese students.

Second, the support and publicity of the student group in the United States.

As the saying goes: "When the fellow sees the fellow, the tears are wandering." Now the fellows and alumni associations of major universities and alumni will be as good as hairy, and it is not difficult to understand that for students who cross the ocean and far away from the United States, the alumni will help each other and contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, contact each other, to contact each other, contact and contact each other. Important organization of emotion. From the 10th century to the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, a civil organization called the "Elino University Alumni Association" has been active in China, and in many core cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Chongqing (Anti -Japanese War (Anti -Japanese War During the period), there are branches. Many members of the alumni association play a decisive role in China's modern development and the improvement of Sino -US relations.

One cavity is hot, worrying about the country and the people

During the period of Yu Nanqiu as the dean of Fudan University, he laid a solid foundation for the development of Fudan liberal arts. Hong Shen, Chen Wangdao, Zhou Gucheng, Chen Zizhan, and Zhou Yu were taught at the Academy of Literature at the time. They could be described as gathered by masters, and the lineup was strong. Xu Yan's "Fudan Classmates Association" recorded in 1948, Yu Nanqiu's Chinese works (including translation) and seven English books, including curriculum textbooks such as "Universities One Year English" and "English Speech", "Storm and Rain "The Autobiography of Nihru" and other literature translated, and there are also "Germany's Unified History of Italy" and so on.

Mr. Yu Nanqiu's works

After the September 18th Incident, Yu Nanqiu actively promoted the anti -Japanese, resisted Japanese goods, and led the students who followed President Lee Teng -hui to the students who went to Beijing to ask Chiang Kai -shek to send troops to fight against Japan. The "March 2nd" incident in Fudan University is an indispensable page in the history of the Chinese students' saving movement. As the Fudan students actively carried out the anti -Japanese rescue work, the Shanghai authorities were beaten and arrested for unnecessary charges. On the night of March 24, 1936, the Shanghai Military and Police authorities mobilized many military police and men's and women's plainclothes detectives to surround the Fudan University group. On March 25, more and more military police outside the Gate of Fudan School were rushed into the school with a bloody conflict with students. President of Fudan Li Denghui and Secretary -General Jin Tongyin, Dean Yu Nanqiu, Professor Gu Zhongyi, Qi Yun, Director of Mission, etc., could not bear to be beaten by the brigade's arms and police officers, and came to persuade him. Yin, Yu Nanqiu, and Gu Zhongyi were beaten to the ground one after another, and President Li was also attacked.

On March 25, 1936, the military and police arrested progressive students on campus (Collection of Fudan University Archives)

Yu Nanqiu always regards youth as a hope for the nation. In 1934, with the support of his mother, Yu Nanqiu donated all the 70th Shoushou Golds prepared by his friends and relatives for his mother. Transfer to the two universities and become a social talk. Wu Boqing, president of Taiwan's "Hunan Literature", studied at the School of Arts of Fudan University in his early years. During this time, due to family changes, he lost his economic source and had thought of dropping out of school. When Yu Nanqiu learned, he encouraged him to overcome difficulties and adhere to his studies. While fighting for school funding for him, he gave him a part of living expenses from his salary every month. Later, Wu Boqing learned that Yu Nanqiu died and cried. He wrote "Educator Yu Nanqiu" in Taiwan's "Biography Literature" to commemorate it. Looking back at the past, as the first dean and director of the Fudan University School of Arts, Mr. Yu Nanqiu deserves to be remembered by Fudan students in terms of learning or being. In that stormy years, there are always such a group of young people who are eager to knowledge, ignite the patriotic and ideal torch, set up Fudan's bones, and illuminate the road of China.
