Belgian nuclear power operator Engie Group said on the 23rd local time that Belgium will officially close the "Doel 3" nuclear reactor later that day. There are two nuclear power plants in Belgium, with a total of 7 nuclear reactors, which will be the first time that the country has terminated nuclear reactor operations.

According to a legislation in Belgium in 2003, all nuclear reactors must be closed after 40 years of operation. However, the proposal to force the termination of nuclear power generation has caused controversy than domestic. Some people are worried that the lack of nuclear power generation, and the power supply will face greater challenges, especially for pushing the electricity price. In this context, the Belgian federal government has previously decided to extend the duration of multiple nuclear reactors, but "Dur 3" is not listed.

In the context of the shortage of energy supply and soaring electricity prices, the different domestic parties in Belgium have recently carried out fierce debate on whether to extend the "Dur 3" service period again, but finally decided not to postpone it.

The "Dur 3" nuclear reactor was completed in 1982 and has been serving for more than 40 years. It had previously failed many times.
